If you happen to visit New Braunfels, which is southwest of Austin, go to Gruene.
Tejas was the only area of Mexico that had a successful revolt for slavery. It was banned in Mexico in 1824. Germany banned serfdom in 1807. Think “Remember the Alamo” as a battle against human rights. Europeans tortured and killed Germans who spoke out in favor of human rights in Tejas. Later the name was changed to Texas as an affront to the Spanish language. Still to this day many towns and cities in Texas have Spanish names but with English only pronunciation. Some locals take a very sour view of the original pronunciations. Some support extra judicial torture and execution currently and have a special fondness for the history of Texas Rangers and their military assaults and deprivations on non-English speaking people. LS
